ACTion with Communities in Cumbria are currently working on behalf of the National Trust to engage local residents on how they would like to see Wordsworth House and Gardens used in the future.

The consultation, taking place over three months from September to December, will look to engage residents from Cockermouth and surrounding areas through a variety of methods, including surveys, open days, and creative focus groups.

All feedback and ideas will be welcomed and considered, including ideas that build on what people already value about the space, as well as suggestions of creative and different ways the site could be used to meet community needs.

The National Trust will not be closing Wordsworth House and Gardens. The purpose of this work is to gather community views on how this much-loved site may be able to better serve the needs and interests of local residents in the future. The results of this engagement will be used alongside other consultation work to help develop a new model for the site.

Opportunities to get involved with the consultation

Surveys:

A survey has been launched to gather initial views on Wordsworth House & Gardens and ideas for how the space can be used from the local community. To complete the survey online here,  or scan the QR codebelow.

If you would like to complete a paper-based version of the survey you can do so by the following methods:

  • Take part in our street survey: We will be visiting different locations in Cockermouth on Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd of September to ask residents’ views on Wordsworth House & Garden. If you see us, please feel free to come and have a chat and share your views!
  • Fill in one of our paper forms: we will be leaving paper copies of the survey with some local businesses in Cockermouth and at Wordsworth House. If you see one, please fill it in and return the copy to Wordsworth House (posted through letterbox if it is shut)

Upcoming events:

Open Day: We will be holding an Open Day at Wordsworth House & Gardens on 26th September. This is an opportunity to visit the site and give your views while seeing the space for yourself.

Keep an eye out for our creative engagement sessions which will be held in October. Ran by a local artist, these sessions will provide the opportunity to explore ideas for the site using creative methods.
